Mac VPS on a real, dedicated Mac mini

The convenience of a virtual server, on Apple silicon that is yours alone while you rent it.

What people mean by a Mac VPS

On Linux, a VPS is a slice of a big server: a virtual machine with root access that you reach over SSH. People searching for a Mac VPS usually want the same thing for macOS: a remote Mac that is always on, that they control fully and that they rent by the month instead of buying.

macOS is licensed to run on Apple hardware, so a Mac in the cloud is either a whole physical Mac or a virtual machine on a Mac shared with others. SoloRack rents the whole machine. You get the server-style experience people expect from a VPS, plus every core of a Mac mini M6.

Server habits that carry over

If you manage Linux servers, most of your routine works on macOS. Add your public key to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and log in with keys. Homebrew is the package manager: brew install for tools, brew services to start databases and daemons. launchd plays the role of systemd and starts your jobs at boot or on a schedule. tmux, rsync, Git and Python are all a command away.

You are the administrator, so sudo works and you can change system settings as you see fit. The Mac stays powered on in the datacenter, which means a long build, a test suite or a coding agent keeps running after you close the connection.

The hardware behind it

Every rental is a Mac mini M6 with an Apple M6 chip with a 12-core CPU, 16 GB of memory and a 256 GB SSD, connected at 1 Gbit/s. Memory on Apple silicon is unified: the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine share the same 16 GB, which keeps Xcode builds, Metal workloads and on-device machine learning with Core ML or MLX quick for a machine this size.

Because no other customer shares the machine, performance is steady. A clean build takes the same time on Monday morning as on Friday night, and the benchmarks you run reflect the hardware rather than your neighbours. The SSD is yours as well, so caches and derived data stay where you left them.

What you can run on it

The most common jobs are iOS and macOS development: Xcode builds, the iOS Simulator, UI tests and App Store uploads. Close behind are CI runners for GitHub Actions or GitLab, signing and notarising macOS apps with codesign and notarytool, and testing web apps in Safari.

People also use a Mac VPS for macOS command-line tools, for automation with Shortcuts or AppleScript, for coding agents such as Claude Code or Cursor that build Apple projects, and for small services that rely on macOS frameworks. If it runs on macOS on Apple silicon, it runs here.

Prices

A Mac mini M6 costs $19 for 24 hours, $49 for 7 days or $112 a month, VAT included where it applies. There is no setup fee. Monthly renewals come with reminders 3 days and 1 day ahead and 24 hours to fix a failed payment with your Mac untouched and reachable. The passes come with reminders 2 hours and again 30 minutes before the end, and you can extend them on the same Mac.

Payment happens on a checkout page hosted by Stripe, with 3D Secure supported, and you manage the monthly plan, invoices and card yourself from My account.

How to connect

Usually within 5 minutes of payment, your Mac is ready in My account with its remote-desktop details and macOS password, ready to copy. Add your public key there and the SSH command appears next to them.

Then make it yours. Add a host entry to ~/.ssh/config so a short alias opens a session, and use VS Code’s Remote - SSH extension if you like editing on your own computer while files and builds live on the Mac. The remote-desktop app is there whenever you want the full macOS interface, for example to sign into the App Store and install Xcode.

Questions

Is this a virtual machine?
No. It is a physical Mac mini M6, rented whole to one customer at a time.
Do I get root access?
Your account is an administrator account, so sudo works and you can install software and change system settings.
Can I run Docker?
Yes. Docker Desktop for Apple silicon runs Linux containers on the Mac, next to your macOS tools.
Which macOS version does it run?
The current macOS release, so the latest Xcode installs straight from the App Store.
